History of Our
Church
Just six years after the founding of Tyrone in 1857, what is now known as the First Presbyterian Church was organized. Permission was "reluctantly granted" to the Rev. John Elliot, a Presbyterian missionary, to begin a congregation here in Tyrone. Eleven members began the enormous task of building a church. Eight years later the first church building was completed at a cost of $ 3,500.
From that rather modest church and its beginnings, our present Church Family now worships, studies, and holds fellowships in a building which cost over $200,000 to build in 1926 and is now worth ten times that much. Our membership is currently 180 with better than 100 people at Worship each Sunday morning.
Over one hundred forty years have passed since Rev. Elliot began the Lord's work in this place. During those years we have been proud to send forth into the Lord's vineyard 11 men to serve in mission fields and other church vocations. The most recent is the Rev. Mark Woomer, ordained on September 28, 1997.
We welcomed our new pastor, Bob Dunkelberger to our pulpit beginning May 1, 2001. We feel very pleased and fortunate that God brought us together.
Weekly worship services are held at 10:30 on Sunday mornings, preceded by Sunday School from 9:15-10:15. There are Sunday school classes for all ages from pre-school through senior citizens.
